23 months old

This close-up shot was taken of Rocco as his Mimi was reading him a book. He is beautiful in this picture (even though he is a boy and I should say handsome). Wow! God has blessed us with an answer to prayer. For years I prayed for a beautiful baby. There could never be another more beautiful in my eyes.

One more month before he turns TWO! My little baby is turning into a toddler. Here is the latest on what Rocco's been doing along with the monthly photo in his blue chair.

1) BBQ Pringles are his favorite food. When given the chips on his high chair, he turns them all over so that the curves are facing the same way. He's also very particular about lining his toy cars and animals a certain way. I hope this meticulous habit he has is the precursor to an organized leadership lifestyle and not one of obsessing over tiny details.

2) When I tell him it is time to get out of the bathtub, he immediately begins to clean up his toys. He'll put his balls in the bucket and all the other toys in their proper place. Before he gets out, he thinks he has to splash with his hands.

3) He's started learning his colors.

4) When we have several items, we'll tell him, "Let's count." He'll use his index finger to point to each of the items while we count.

5) In the bathtub, he often does not want to sit down. He prefers to stand up and make wet splashes with his feet as he stomps.

6) He can finally step down the one step into Nana and Granddaddy's living room without holding on to the wall, someone's hand, or sitting down.

7) His basic phone conversation is always the same. He greets the person with a high pitched, "Hey!" He normally ends with three "Bye, bye, bye."

8) Playing with his matchbox cars is one of his favorite things to do. He makes the "Bbbb," sound to go along with it so much I'm surprised his lips aren't tired.

9) He can construct a tower 10 blocks high.

10) On 3-1-08, he called me "Mommy," for the first time instead of "Mama."

11) It won't be much longer until he can pedal himself on the tricycle. Just recently he grew tall enough to barely touch them!

12) The simplest things bring him joy. . . seeing a box of Cheerios, getting a glimpse of me when I pick him up in the afternoon, or just lining up his toys. He'll do a quick dance, sort of like jogging in place, while he exclaims, "Yeah!" When he gets really excited, he'll run around the room and sling his right arm back and forth.

13) He holds a pen like an adult. He'll look really close at the paper and intently scribble on paper.

14) On our way to church we pass a power plant. Rocco loves to point to the tall smoke stacks. We have to acknowledge them every time. You can see them from a far distance, so for about 5 or minutes we'll talk about them, count the smoke stacks, and when we pass them he'll shrug his arms like, "Where'd they go?" He answers his own question by pointing back behind himself when they're out of sight.

15) Rocco is a little mess. As soon as I take off his diaper and clothes for his bath, he takes off running. I'll chase him calling, "Come here you nudy boy. I'll get you nudy bootie!" He laughs, rolls around on the carpet, and runs away from me some more.

16) He'll work at the calculator pushing buttons and say, "Two, two. two. . . " He still loves to brush his teeth. I guess we eith have a dentist or future accountant on our hands.

Uh Oh! Look Who's In Trouble!

Rocco is getting creative with the use of his toys lately. He started using his Little Tikes table as a slide tonight. Just when I thought I'd let it go unnoticed, he became a little more brave. Now this is a little bit too far. Check out the intent concentration on his face.
What is this. . . surfing table style? "Get down right now, Rocco. No standing on the table." Yeah, he knows he's a stinker and not supposed to be doing that.

"Jason, come look what your son is doing."

Well, it was fun while it lasted. Don't worry, Mimi and Nana. He's learned that this is not acceptable.

A Day of Loss

It all started late last night. I had to call in sick and prepare for yet another lost day of work. The viral infection/head cold has taken a toll on me. In all, I've been sick for almost 3 weeks. I'm so ready to feel better. I hate losing my weekends. That is precious time I get to spend with Rocco. I've missed church the last two weekends, too.

A lost day of work was nothing compared to what we would learn about at 2am. One of my best friends/prayer warrior, Gloria, lost her mother. Jason left in the wee hours of the morning to be with the grieving family. Their loss is heaven's gain. She was a godly woman.

The day was still young at 9am when it happened again. We lost two of our barns to a fire. The two structures that once were a landmark on our farm are now gone due to a lightning strike. So is our nephew's four wheeler, the lawnmower, countless tools, and part of my father-in-law's tractor. One of the worst losses was our hay. Every bit of it. . . 35 bales. . . is now in a blaze of smoke. Jason had just finished moving it all over there the other day. In these days of drought, hay is like gold. Poor cows. We'll have to trust and pray for some other way to feed them.

Thankfully, Jason had just moved the new tractor away from these barns last night. It could have been much worse.

This afternoon Jason attended a funeral of a lady in our church who lost her father. All in all, it's been a day of great loss.

February Photos

I wanted to include a few new photos that I've taken of Rocco this month. The following two were taken on the night of our church Valentine's dinner. This was the night of Feb. 13th.

And this picture was a sweet shot I got of him on Feb. 10th. Look at him sporting his stylish outfit that I found at a great deal on E-bay! He loved the new shoes. Any time he gets new shoes, he has to wear them around the house to try them out.

Color Smart

We've been working with Rocco on his colors. It seems that he is doing really well for a 22 month old!

It's Official!!

When I woke up this morning, I whispered to Rocco, "This is your big day. It's your adoption day!" With his eyes still closed, he gave a sweet grin. I'm not sure he really understood what all this meant, but this day would be forever sketched in our hearts.

On February 13, 2008, Tuan Minh Duong officially became Rocco Jase Willis. The weather was a typical winter day with blistering winds and temperatures below freezing. Regardless of the wetness and cold, we were thrilled to brave the weather and head to the courthouse. This was our special re-finalization day. . . the day that we would file for Rocco's American birth certificate with his new name.

Rocco has been ours since March 14th 2007; he's been an American citizen since March 29, 2007, when the wheels of the plane touched down in Atlanta, GA. Today is significant because it is the last milestone of our adoption process. No more post adoption visits, no more required photos, no more red tape to cross or papers to fill out (well with the exception of getting his new SSN and N-565). It was such a relief today to be through with the process.

The ceremony was extra special because our judge was Jason's aunt. She allowed us to take photos during the actual ceremony. What you see below is not a stock photo but actually a picture of us taking the oath.

Before Judge Tami signed the papers, she reached for something and said that she had something special made for us. It was a pen that had never been used before. It said, "This pen on paper seals forever the love that exists on this day. Congratulations, Judge Tami." She used that pen to sign the seal required to change his name.
Then, she handed it over to Jason.
She said that when Rocco is old enough to understand the importance of this day, he will have this tangible memento to keep. She also said that he was one lucky fella to have such great parents. When I returned to work later, I showed that pen to everyone I knew. I was so proud of it and look forward to the day that I can explain it all to Rocco.

I'm sure that most judges don't do this after their adoption ceremonies, but she took time to play tractor with him on the floor.
The journey began Jan of 2006. Two years and one month later, we find ourselves the parents of the most beautiful boy God ever created.
And how did we celebrate? With some pancakes from I Hop of course!

Get a Different Name Day

Tuan Minh Duong. That's our little boy. Tomorrow, he will officially become Rocco Jase Willis. The court date was none of our choosing, yet it coincides with February 13th, National Change Your Name Day. How ironic is that?

It's amazing to see God's hand working in our lives. Thirteen has always been our number. Jason and I had our first date on Jan 13, 1996, we married on Sept. 13, 1997, we first saw Rocco on March 13, 2007, and he will officially be Rocco Willis on Feb. 13, 2008. I only wish we could have 13 children. . . well maybe not that many! At any rate, I am very excited about tomorrow. It's been a long time coming. He's been Rocco to us since we saw his referral picture, but tomorrow will make it more official.

Little Farmer

Drew and Rocco spent some time on the farm together this afternoon. I've learned one thing; if you want Rocco to smile, just get him around Drew. They're more than first cousins; they are buddies. Rocco doesn't give this kind of sugar to just anybody! Both of them enjoyed the new big toy on the farm. . . the John Deere tractor. While Rocco was taking his four hour nap earlier, Drew was putting in a hard day's work. He spent six hours outside helping his Uncle Jason put up a fence for the cattle. Rocco was in a great mood after all that snoozing and was ready for some fun on the farm!

I don't think you could find a more beautiful sunset than those we experience on the farm. Even though you can't see the sunset too well in this photo, I love this shot of Drew and Rocco walking off into the sunset hand in hand. Rocco is ready to go in his farmer outfit. He is a Liberty Overhaul and Carthart kind of guy. . . but he's handsome in anything!

New Tractor on the Farm

Years of praying, dreaming, and hoping finally became a reality today as the John Deere tractor was delivered to the farm. And one little boy was very happy about it (of course I'm talking about Jason).
Rocco took it all in and was serious while he rode inside it. Don't be mistaken though, he was full of laughter this afternoon on the farm.
He's had so many tractor books read to him. His favorite one is the actual sales catalog that adults read when they're looking at buying one. Today, he became the co-owner of his very own green and yellow Deere. When we asked him if he liked it, he pooched his lips out like he does and nodded his head, "Yes." He did not want to go home. At one point I thought he was motioning for me when he was sitting in the tractor, but he was actually telling us to close the door. He was ready to ride some more! Can you spot that cute little face inside the huge tractor?
This tractor was a good investment for the farm, but even more so for strengthening the daddy/son bond these two have going on.
Not to mention the granddaddy and grandson bond, too. . .
Nana has even learned how to join in on the fun. As long as she and I can ride in the buddy seat, we'll be cowgirls with them!

Buddy Bear's Playhouse

Inflatables, slides, games, token cars to ride in, cupcakes, and lots of kids to play with are what we found at Buddy Bear's Playhouse this weekend. Rocco was invited to his cousins' birthday party (Zak turned 2 and Dillon turned 9), and we made the special trip so that he could play with his cousins that he doesn't get to see that often. Rocco and Zack are only a month apart. Erik (on the far left in the picture below) and his brother Preston (oldest one on the right) are also Rocco's cousins. I think this was the first time he'd ever met them. My mom's mom is Helen. She has a sister named Pat who has two daughters named Stephanie and Stacy. Dillon and Zack belong to Stephanie, and Preston and Erik are Stacy's boys. I wish Papaw Odis and mamaw, my nana and Aunt Pat's parents, were still alive to see them. They'd be so proud. For the longest our family only had girls. Check out the handsome boys below. Rocco was afraid at first to play in the inflatables. Clinging tightly to me, he fussed and cried while the kids around him were having a great time. Slowly he began to warm up to the whole idea of jumping and sliding down the inflatables. After I had played with little man for an hour, it was Uncle Ty's turn to enjoy the inflatables with him a while. They climbed, jumped, and slid. When they got through Rocco wanted to go again.

Rocco's mimi got in on the action, too. Rocco and my mom tried to make it through the maze. Although she didn't brave the slide, I think she had more fun than him! I love this picture of my dad with Rocco. I'm glad that my parents came to the party. Today was their 34th anniversary. After eating dinner, this was their "date." Their lives have changed, too, since Rocco came along!I can't believe he wanted to sit in this car. Up until now he's been scared of things like this. He enjoyed sitting next to Garfield and turning the steering wheel. . . that is until my dad put a token in it for him and he wanted OUT!
