21 Months Old

Rocco turned 21 months old today. Of course I had to take his picture in his blue chair, with a current toy that he plays with, and with him wearing a white onesie. I love looking at the monthly photos to see how much he has grown and changed over the last 9 months since we've had him. What a little man he is! And to see his little personality coming out. . . along with some daredevil courage. I'm starting to have to really watch our little explorer! Here's the latest.

1. He's very vocal. Lately we've been working more on the accuracy of his sounds. He likes to call everything "Uhh, uhh." He actually said, "More", as plain as day after I insisted and kept on pointing to my mouth and making the mmm sound when he wanted more Cheerios.

2. Rocco enjoys climbing and doing courageous tricks.

3. Daddy now puts him on his toy tractor and lets him ride down the sloped driveway (much to mommy's heart attack dismay!)

4. He loves to wrestle around on the floor and in the bed with mommy and daddy at any given time.

5. He'll let you know what he wants to do. For instance, he'll pick out a book that he wants read, pull out the bubbles from under the sink, point to the mouse when he wants to take charge at the computer, or sit down on the floor with a ball when he wants to roll it back and forth. If you're sitting down and he wants you to exercise or go somewhere, he'll grab you by the pants and urge you to come on!
6. Playing the drums and other instruments is something he really enjoys, and for 21 months old he's really good at it.
7. Recently he's really begun to like hiding. Our friends bought him a tent, and he'll go inside it, sit quietly, and smile while we wonder aloud, "Where'd Rocco go?" He also loves to hide between the book shelves, too.
8. At times he'll show an emotion of fear. The other day he was having so much fun with the Hokey Pokey Elmo when all of a sudden he decided it scared him. He ran to us and wanted to feel safe in our arms. Needless to say, we put Elmo away for a while. It's the craziest thing that he's not scared of the big bulls or horses yet a little toy crab in the tub can offset a fear response.
9. More so than ever Rocco is a little copy cat. He'll use household items in a pretend way, for example he'll get the camera and act like he's taking a picture. Whatever pose we strike or motion we do, he'll try to do it as well. From putting his hands on his cheeks to propping up against the kitchen counter, there's always two little eyes just watching our every move.
10. Rocco is a little gentleman in so many ways. He covers his mouth when he coughs, picks up items that he spills or messes up and places them where they belong, throws items in the trash, and sits so still when we need to give him a breathing treatment (Thank the Lord especially for the last one!)
11. He interacts well with other kids. He has the biggest time with Drew, and he willingly shares everything with him. They just laugh and have a big time. On Sunday afternoons, Rocco also plays well with his cousins.
12. At 21 months, Rocco can identify more than 10 body parts. When we want him to smile for the camera we just ask him,"Where's your teeth?" He also loves to take his socks off.
13. Good hygiene is not a struggle because he enjoys taking his bath, often shaking his head no when asked if he is ready to get out. During the day he'll get the toothbrush out of the bathroom drawer and want to brush. And when I brush his teeth he lets me, although sometimes he likes to bite down on the brush. He's happy as long as he can hold a toothbrush while I'm brushing him with another.
14. One way he shows love is by touching your face. When he goes to sleep, he wants his head right next to mine so that he can reach up with his sweet fingers and rub my face. He also likes to get lotion on his hands and rub it on my face, too.
15. Before he eats almost any bite, he has to point at it several times and discuss it. "Uhh, uhh." We'll tell him what it is and that he'll like it. After much talk and persuasion, he'll eat it (well. . . sometimes).

Christmas Again!

Tonight my mom, dad, brother, nana, and papaw came to our house to celebrate Christmas. (Below: Rocco and my nana - his "grandnana")Had we not been sick, we would have had it on Christmas day. We're still not all completely well; Rocco has been on breathing treatments for mild pneumonia, I've struggled with allergies, and my dad and nana were still trying to get over their sickness. In spite of all this, we had a great time eating and opening presents.

Rocco loaded up! I won't list everything he got from his mimi, Uncle Tyler, grand nana, and his two papaws, but I will say that he's been enjoying his Radio Flyer tricycle. As of right now he's too little to reach the pedals, but he kindly puts his feet up so that we can push him. There is a compartment in the back that he loves to put blocks, cars, and balls in. During bath time he can now play basketball and shoot some hoops with his new tub toys.

It's fun to watch him go from toy to toy. He has so much to play with, every five or ten minutes we're discovering with a different toy. He'll walk around with his connecting colored blocks and then move on to play his sliding whistle. After a while he'll pick up his harmonica and play a tune. (You get the idea.)And you can be sure he will be styling with his new clothes, all of which he took no interest in but mom and dad certainly appreciate.

One thing I've learned this year is that having a kid sure makes it easy when you're buying for grandparents. I gave my mom a shirt that says, "Rocco's Mimi." You'd have thought she just won the keys to a new car. When my dad opened the family photo calendar I made him he said that it was the best present he'd ever received. And when my mom and nana opened their homemade reindeer (made from Rocco's hand and foot prints) they almost forgot they had more presents left. They just kept looking at the reindeer. It's great to have parents who are so crazy about your child like that. I guess that's why they're called GRAND parents.

Christmas Day

Rocco did not wake up until 9:30 this morning. Once I got the video camera ready, he walked in the living room with daddy to see what Santa had brought. He went straight to his keyboard and started playing it. After that he made his way to the drum set. He hit every piece on it, including the seat. When he finally did sit down, he kept hitting the cymbals. It took him a while before he checked anything else out. He gradually found his way to the golf set; daddy showed him how it was done. Rocco just kept hitting the ball between his legs, more like croquet than a golf swing. The last big item Santa brought was a Black and Decker workbench. Little man impressed us with his fine motor skills as he picked up the screwdriver and tightened up the bolts. Daddy showed him how to drill out the pieces of wood in the bird feeder. Never at any time did he show any interest in the clothes Santa brought.
This was the first Christmas in all my 31 years that I did not see my family. Jason, Rocco, and I stayed at home all day in our pajamas and just played with toys. I cooked a big breakfast of eggs, biscuits, gravy, bacon, juice, milk, and coffee. We just snacked around the rest of the day. What a memorable Christmas! We are so blessed to have Rocco. What a difference he's made in our lives.

We ended the day in our pj's reading the story of Jesus' birth from the Gospel of Luke and singing Happy Birthday to our Savior. What a difference He has made in our lives. We love you Jesus!

Christmas at Nana and Granddaddy's

There were two happy little boys at nana and granddaddy's house tonight. Drew and Rocco ran around laughing, making funny noises, falling down, and just having a big time . . . and that was before it was even time for presents! Once the gifts started coming, Rocco didn't know what to think. We'd help him unwrap a gift, open it up, assemble it, enjoy it, and what??? more??? About the time he'd start to play with one toy it was time to open another! Big trucks, tractors, books, Wiggles and cartoon DVDs, fruit, candy, flashlights, Bulldog piggy bank, jack-in-the-box, Mr. Potato head, and more. He had never seen such before. He thought he had to try every flavor of sucker in one sitting. He got some really nice clothes, too. Mommy and daddy especially appreciated them, but those didn't keep his attention for long. It was the radio flyer all-terrain wagon that brought the big smiles. This gift was from Uncle Ben, Aunt Tonya, and Drew. It is the Cadillac of wagons!!

When he opened his John Deere tractor he got very excited and his little feet did a dance. It didn't take long for him to figure out what to do with the tunnel. It has multiple "secret compartments" that he can crawl and hide in. That's his new thing. . . hiding. He kept popping his head out and then back in quickly like a turtle. Rocco was so sweet about helping us put the wrapping paper up once we opened gifts. He'd go to the bathroom and place it in the trash. One time he closed the door and couldn't get out. We heard him screaming like crazy. Poor fella thought he was locked in there for good. Of course I doted on him and gave him tons of loving after I quickly opened the door for him. He was fine in a matter of seconds and ready to open more gifts.

Christmas break will be a blast this year. We have so many cool presents to add to our playroom, and a brand new Little Tikes table to play on, too. When we built our house 7 years ago I knew I wanted our big bonus room upstairs to be for our kids to play in. Years later we're going to get to use it as our little boy enjoys his new toys from his family and Santa. That's another treat this year. It's been years since I was a little girl, and he visited me. I'm looking forward to hearing those bells jingle in the cold winter night again!!

What's going on in that dirty clothes hamper?

I'm not sure what he's found, but I know it can't smell too good. This was certainly one of those priceless childhood moments I couldn't pass up. Check out how serious he's taking the job of digging out those socks.

Drew and Rocco

It's so evident that Rocco loves his first cousin, Drew. When they're together, Rocco gets beside himself laughing. He giggles so fast and in such a silly way that is cracks all of us up. When they're not together, Rocco talks about him (he puckers his lips up and forms a Zshh sound. . . It comes out as Zshrew.) Other than giving me love, Drew was the first one to get kisses from Rocco on the cheek.

They play together like they're brothers, racing cars, throwing the ball, laughing, wrestling on the floor. It's a real treat to watch them interact together.
The day we came home from Vietnam, Drew waited patiently for hours in the same spot at the top of the elevator anticipating the arrival of his new cousin. He proudly stood there in his Rocco t-shirt. When they finally met for the first time, Rocco went to him with ease. After 9 months, the new still hasn't worn off. Drew is just as crazy about Rocco as Rocco is about him. This picture below was taken a week after we arrived home.

I had to post these great pictures of the two of them. The matching outfits and hats are compliments of Uncle Ben, Drew's dad.

Nine Months Ago Today

Nine months ago, on March 14th, Rocco officially became ours. After our Giving and Receiving Ceremony in Ninh Thuan, Vietnam, we were declared Rocco's parents. The missing piece was finally laid in place and our family of 2 became 3. He was, and still is, such a beautiful boy, both inside and out. To be entrusted with his precious life is an unbelievable privilege. Some days I look at him and can't believe that it is actually true. The child my heart ached and longed for so long is now in our arms. Getting to see him learn, develop, and explore this great big world is such an adventure. I'm having the time of my life!

Birthday Weekend

Turning 31 was so fun this year. It was my first birthday being a mom, and being with my family was the best gift. To make it even better, my brother, parents, grandparents, Rocco, and I all headed to the Smoky Mtns. where we relaxed in a nice 2 bedroom condo. For four days we just ate, shopped, rested, and went to Dollywood.

No words can describe the happiness within my heart as I saw my papaw reading a book to Rocco or watched my nana chase Rocco around so much they couldn't run anymore from laughing. I love my grandparents more than I can possibly describe, and to see Rocco enjoying spending time with them is such a blessing. Every time we got in the car to go somewhere, Rocco would entertain us with his dance motions to his Wiggles Christmas DVD. My nana and Rocco were almost out of control having too much fun with this song!Tyler, my brother, was thrilled when Rocco started saying, "Ty." I love this photo of them enjoying the carousel. It was Rocco's first time on one and he begged to ride it more and more. My mom and dad enjoyed the trip as well. They were able to enjoy Rocco at this fun age. My dad taught him to say baby, and my mom had a time showing him all of the trains at the Christmas Place. Between listening to him say new words and watching him dance and explore, it is always fun and entertaining to see what this little boy of ours is going to do next. He's changing and learning at such a fast pace, I don't want to miss any of it. We all treasured this trip and agreed that it was one of our best family moments yet.

While we were at Dollywood, my brother and I rode the craziest roller coasters (strapped in, straight up, screaming down, turning a cork screw, and looping the letter C). It made me feel young. . . even though I am 31.

New Word!

Rocco officially said his second word. "Home." He also used the sign for it. When I asked him if he was ready to go, he said, "Home" so clearly. We jumped up and down and rejoiced. Carolyn and I heard him say it when I was picking him up from her house. He says it quickly and focuses on the mmm part.
